Now that I don’t have to carry a diaper bag there are pretty much only two essentials I need to have on me at all times: crayons and some sort of small game. With these in my purse, I am armed for battle as a Mom: long wait at a restaurant? airport delay? stuck in the exam room at the pediatrician? I’m covered.
I keep crayons in a little tin I found at the Dollar Spot at Target. It keeps them out of the bottom of my purse and in one piece and holds a full 24-pack. An empty Altoids tin will also work.
But games are what really pass the time and I prefer we try old-fashioned ones like cards as opposed to pulling out my iPhone ~ for starters I’ve only got one and two kids, so you do the math. But also, I’m a big believer in the fact that some things are for grown ups just because I say so. I’m mean that way. The only problem with card games is that the boxes easily break and then the deck either spills all over my purse or the cards get bent.
So today I made a little pouch for our beloved Uno set. We are very serious Uno players. I’m considering setting them out on the Uno circuit to earn their way through college. Little Cutie, in particular, engages in some pretty intense trash talk that amuses us all in the way only a 7-year-old can {like you’re going down….to Antarctica!}.
So I started by sewing up a little pocket pouch with turned under seams and pinking the edges.
Then I added some grosgrain ribbon {be sure to add some fray check or run your edges under a flame to seal them so they don’t unravel}. If you’re a better sewer than I am ~ and let’s face it, an orangatan is a better sewer ~ you could add a button and button-hole, but that would have required me to get out my manual and involved changing feet on the machine, and we all know that wasn’t going to happen. So if you go the ribbon route, be sure to sew it on extra-securely so little hands tugging won’t rip it off!
It needed a little oomph. I imagine making up a bunch of these for other games, so I thought it would be smart to identify from the outside. So I found some stickers and traced the letters U, N and O onto coordinating felt and then glue gunned them on the back of the pouch.
And there you go!

I love that you glue gunned them on–is there anything that a glue gun can’t do? I mean apart from the obvious stuff like child birth. I love my glue gun!

What a neat little pouch! I’m with you on the old fashioned games! Last week I made a special battleships folder for my girls – for the paper and pencil version of the game – and they love it!

Love the pouch idea. My son has lots of flash cards. the boxes get pretty ratty, pretty quickly. I’ve made new boxes using old cereal boxes. I’ll have to try the pouch idea next time.
