Once again, Riordan writes a rousing tale with engaging characters. Percy and Annabeth must travel through Tartarus to meet the other demigods at the mortal side of the Doors of Death so they can unchain them and keep monsters trapped in Tartarus. They travel to the Ancient Lands of the Mediterranean and meet several interesting characters along the way. There are some surprise revelations in this novel as each character learns more about himself or herself and personal powers. The theme of this book seems to be choices: no matter where we come from, we can choose our own future. Good message for teen readers.
