Spatial Mathematics: A Study of How It Relates To Crafting

That's quite a verbose title, eh? I thought we could throw some math into the crafting mix and see what becomes of it. Yes, I do know that there is actually math in crafting, the whole measuring thing and all, but I thought we could dig deeper, expound further, and really study and reflect on this topic.

I know my readers are as smart as they come so I know you all will be able to help me find answers to all my burning questions regarding this theory.

And the question at the top of my list with regards to Spatial Mathematics is this:

Why is it that I can start with a (relatively) clean desk....

.....and then end up trying to craft in a 6" x 11" space?

And I find that when it happens, I'm also smaller, kwim? I'm crafting with my head down, shoulders hunched, T-Rex arms, slouched and curved so much that if a chiropractor saw me they'd start rubbing their hands in anticipatory glee. It's almost as if the universe is trying to compress me into that same crafting space as some sort of punishment, that it's railing against me for creating my own craft imprisonment, letting me know that I should push out and expand my horizons, to use every space, meaning all the creativeness I have at my disposal, instead of being too much aware of my constraints, like time (and the guilt of using it on something that's not "necessary") or my feeling of inadequacy with regards to my skill level etc. and that I really shouldn't be bowing down under all that massive and oppressive weight.

Now, that's heavy.

Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. Get it?  Weight - heavy.  *snicker*  Did I have you there for a minute at least? Really, in truth, it has nothing to do with mathematics at all. I'm just a messy pig.

But I'm a messy pig who made a card though. And here it is.....

Digi is from By Lori Designs.

Like that lace flower there?  Isn't it awesome?  I unceremoniously ripped it off a shirt that no longer fit my daughter.  'Cause I may, or may not, have originally bought the shirt for the sole purpose of doing that in the future.  (And I may or may not have my eye on another shirt of hers that I plan to cannibalize the instant I think it's too small for her.)

  1. Ah this is so sweet, what a fabby card, Love the colors you have gone for. I too suffer from that weighty issue. My desk size turns to that of a small postage stamp!! Very strange!! LOL. Thanks for sharing on My Time to Craft this week, Love Hazel (Didos) xx

  5. OMG! Another piglet just like me! I am currently down to a 6 x 6" area to work in... I have to clean it up today cuz I wanna make a 6 x 7" card next and the base CS won't even fit the space! Good to meet you by the way.
Oh yeah, on to business... I really like the layers you've created with this one Jan! The wonky stitching is quite appealing to me with this image and the paper piecing on her is perfect. Well done toots! Thank you for sharing your project & creativity with us!

  6. Ah organized chaos that's my style! I think after my last desk cleaning it took less than 10 minutes before I had it looking like I actually let my kids near my desk. My mess actually extends to the floor around my desk as I like to lay out my possible papers to see what appeals. I think my husband may draw the line with my mess if I start hanging paper and other supplies from his workout equipment.

Wonderful card Jan. I love the flower, it works so well with the card. Great way to repurpose your daughter's clothes. I am going to now keep a close eye on what mine have and see if I can see some goodies.

  7. I have an entire room to craft in and somehow, when I am done with my little A2 size card, it looks like a tornado hit it. I tell myself that truly creative people are messy. Yes, its BS, shh! don't tell myself that : ) I love your card and I am now scoping out my girls closets for embellishments. Thanks for playing with us at 613 Avenue Create.

  8. I'm still giggling at your before and after craft desk photos. Looks so similar to mine. Why do we do that to ourselves? In any event...if being a messy pig helps you create such wonderful cards then I say embrace your inner self and keep going :o) Love, love love this card. Great paper pieced dress and wonderful way to salvage those ribbons. Thanks so much for joining us this week at MTTC. Hugs D

  15. Stunning card, love the colours and the stitching. It does not matter how much room you have to craft, you always end up with a tiny bit of space left! Love the description of you hunched over your project with t-rex arms! Thanks for joining us at Perfectly Rustics.

  24. Hahaha...I don't even start off with it tidy. And I'm the kind of person who would rather go build another desk than tidy the first one. In fact, I just did that. Oops...I love the card you have made though. Beautiful! And the image is so cute! Thanks for playing along at Aud Sentiments. Love MC x

Okay, so ever since I started my blog (well, maybe not right from the get-go, it was probably a good six months or so before I realized you could change it from just "Leave your comment") I've tried to come up with something witty to type here.

*sitting with brow furrowed in concentration*...*staring at the ceiling while pursing lips*...*resting with head on hand while tapping foot*...

Nope, I still got nothing.
