Summer of ‘71

“For God’s sake Pete, it is summer, soak up the sun and quit bugging me with your university applications. It is holiday time, amigo. Why don't you appreciate the beauty around you?,” said Tony, hinting towards Sofia as she lay fanning herself on the bonnet of 1967 Impala, wearing an orange crop top with rugged denim pants.

For Tony, uprooting the grass and dirtying his nails with mud was the only way of venting frustration. Half-heartedly, he eyed the Latina from the corner of his eye. The expression of admiration soon turned to absolute horror as he saw a wing of burning fighter copter whooshing towards the Impala, landing on Sofia’s bare midriff and splattering blood on grass.

For the rest of his life, he could not eject Sofia’s last image before her death, a playful wink while nibbling on the straw of her Virgin Mary.

Friday Fictioneers is a unique challenge that is hosted by Rochelle Fields where writers pen 100-word stories inspired by the photo prompt. For more information see:

  8. A horrifying but well-written story. I can see why someone would carry that vision for the rest of their lives.

    1. Hi, P.S.

Maybe because some visions are etched in your memory forever. And an image like this is hard to shake off.
