This is a juvenile novel wanting to be a young adult novel with a twelve-year-old protagonist with her first love. The themes of peer death and young love make it for slightly older readers. Also there's a mild language alert. It was an interesting read as Martha comes to grips with the death of a classmate who left a note in her journal that Martha was nice and she wanted to be friends with her. Martha learns about life from her wise and loving grandmother when her family goes to the coast for a vacation. She also learns about young love and betrayal by boys.
