It’s that time again. Time to reveal my Get Your DIY on Fall Party Challenge Project. Our theme for this Sunday’s party is spray paint projects.
When I was deciding what to do for this project, the first thing that came to mind was this lampshade. I found it at a yard sale this Summer for $2, but it was pretty plain.
I thought I really scored finding this really nice lampshade…turns out, it’s from Wal-Mart! But it’s still a nice lamp shade. Plus if I ruin it while attempting this makeover, I’ll only be out $2.
Here is how it started:
Here’s the tedious taping in progress…
I made a stencil of sorts and just penciled around the edges onto my shade. Someone’s been eating…goldfish crackers? Those are supposed to be for the kids, mom!
I know it seems like taping this off was so tedious, but it honestly wasn’t too bad and went pretty quickly.
Time for spray paint. Waiting between coats is like waiting for white out to dry…I’m too impatient to wait! But after all that taping , I was very careful this time! I gave my shade three light coats, allowing each coat to dry in between.
Then I pulled off the tape immediately after applying the third coat of paint. Ooh Sharp! Rustoleum rocks!
Here he is with his fancy new look.
I spray painted the lamp last year, but I think it’s too light for the shade. It’ll do for now. I just put this fun Halloween printable in front of it and I’ll decide how I want to update it later.
I printed this last year. I searched high and low for hours (actually I lie, thank you Pinterest!) to find you the link. It’s from Visual Eye Candy and you can see it here.
The frame was gold, I spray painted the mat in flat black and the frame in semi-gloss for contrast.
The shade looks pretty fabulous with my Halloween treasures. I spray painted the branches too.
I found these fun Halloween accessories at TJ Maxx last year or the year before. They have an awesome selection of Halloween goodies.
This little side table is actually a sewing table I scored for $20 at a yard sale. You can see the before and what’s inside here. You might be surprised.
Here’s a peek at what the shade looks like lit up:
It still puts off plenty of light.
Want to see something really scary? Check out this Ernie doll…
It’s scarier than Halloween! The lady at the thrift store gave it to him and he loves it!
Do you remember that mirror project? It was the result of a big fat fail. You can see more here. Part of it was spray painted also!
Here’s what my creative co-hosts came up with for the spray paint challenge. Click the links below the image to see more.

I’m so excited to bring out ALL my Halloween Spookies. (Or as Brennan calls them, “Pookies”)
I haven’t decorated any further than this so far. Outside is where the real fun begins! Did I mention how much I love Halloween?
Hope you like my spray painted shade. I will give his girlfriend, the lamp, a makeover soon too so they’ll make a cuter couple.
In the mean time, don’t forget to come back Sunday at 7:00 EST to link up your spray paint projects, or just to see how creative (or dangerous) folks can get with a can of spray paint!

Christy, you did such a great job on this print- it looks store bought it’s so good. I may need you to mail me your stencil- LOL. Your vignette is great- I haven’t started doing anything on the inside yet. I need to get on that!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Mandy! Now if the tape would come off that clean on wood! I just pulled those few Halloween things out for my post. I’m sure they’ll get moved when I really start pulling everything out 🙂
Ashley @ 3littlegreenwoods says
You did that with Frogtape and spray paint?! Get out!
I love the look! I just might have to redo my Beast from Goodwill Lamp with a new shade!
Take care,
Ashley @3littlegreenwoods
Christy K. James says
I know, right? The lines came out really sharp! I’m thinking I need another row of chevron so it’s not so Charlie Brown 🙂
Andi says
I love your Halloween table! And the lamp rocks! Kinda like Charlie Brown…but Black… 😛

Christy K. James says
Thanks, April! 🙂
Stephanie @ Simply Swider says
It came out so good Christy! I’ve never thought to use spray paint on a lamp shade before. I’m actually currently in a lampshade dilemma for our family room. This is just the inspiration I needed.
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Stephanie! This was my first try. The tape makes a fantastic seal on the shade! 🙂
Liz @ Infuse With Liz says
Very cute decorations! I like the sticks painted black in the mercury glass piece- fun look! Your chevron lampshade looks really great. I admire you for give it a try. Looks like it came out perfect! If I did it it would have had some overspray, or bleeding or something! Your little one is adorable. Boy I miss those young years with my kids!
Christy K. James says
Thanks so much for your kind words, Liz! The tape stuck really well to the shade. I was impressed myself at how sharp the lines came out! 🙂 as fir my little one, I enjoy every minute with him…my older son just turned eleven and he is just so big now. It makes me want to treasure this time with my little one even more! 🙂
Laurel Stephens says
Your lamp shade is fantastic on it’s own, but really fabulous in your vignette!
Christy K. James says

I am new follower…and I had to chime in and say I LOVE the lampshade!! I have been looking for something different like that – now to find a cheap shade at the thrift store!! Thanks for sharing – enjoy the rest of your week!
Christy K. James says
I’m so glad you like it, Cheryl! The tape adhered really nicely to the shade making the lines really crisp. I wish it worked on wood like that 🙂
Michele says
I love T.J. Maxx, I a good spray paint project, and I love how your amazing lamp shade turned out! Thanks for another dose of inspiration!! *hugs*
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Michele! Just stopped by your blog and I am loving your plank wall bathroom!! Now you ave me inspired! 🙂
Cindy @ diy beautify says
Christy, I love the chevron shade – he rocks!! And your whole spooky vignette is really cool!! I scored an antique sewing table very much like yours at goodwill a couple years ago! Mine was marked down to $9.99!! I didn’t want what was inside (I don’t want to give it away) and asked if I could just buy the table. Alas they said no, so I bought it all and donated the “insides” back to goodwill, lol!! I painted my table white too 🙂
Cindy
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Cindy! I thought I got a great deal, but you did even better! I bought another sewing machine cabinet at a thrift store a while ago and I tried to leave the machine behind also, but they said no. Turns out, it was the very first electronic sewing machine singer ever made and retailed for about $1000 in the 70’s! It even had a stitch shaped like a Scottie dog!
Amy @ StowandTellU says
Stopping by from Funky Junk. Love your chevron lamp shade it works with or without Halloween, so cool!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Amy! Just found a chunkier lamp to redo to go with it after Halloween 🙂

Love this…everything about it! BTW, that Ernie doll really is scary. We had one around the house growing up, and it would turn on all by itself! Nothing worse than possessed toys! 😉

Thanks, Jamie! Yes, Ernie is super creepy, but my son loves it 🙂
Yvonne @ StoneGable says

Christy K. James says

Mindi says

SO glad I found this! The shade looks awesome, and I love the entire display too. I just discovered spray paint, and nothing is safe around here anymore. 🙂
Christy K. James says
Yes, spray paint can be dangerously addictive! I’m glad you like my shade. I was pleasantly surprised how well the tape sealed the edges…nice sharp lines! Have a great weekend, Dee 🙂
deonna says
this turned out great…I did a chevron navy and white lamp shade and loved it but I think i love yours more…I like how you just did two stripes instead of the whole shade…I used acrylic paint but the spray paint looks much cleaner…great job!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Deonna! I was really amazed at how well spray paint worked on the shade! 🙂
Ellora @ Creatively Southern says
Love Love Love your lamp shade. I have been wanting to try something like this, but that whole thing of seeming tedious… yeah, that’s holding me back. You have more patience than me! 🙂 Your vignette looks so great! And why is it that our children always like the creepy looking toys that people give them? I have a two year old and it’s the same way! 🙂 Happy Halloween!!!!
Ellora @ Creatively Southern says
P.S. I’m pinning this for one day when I have more patience to try it! 😉
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Ellora! I know I could secretly toss that Ernie and he’d never know, but I don’t have the heart because he loves it! As for the shade, it really wasn’t too bad and the spray paint worked surprisingly well. Thanks so much for the visit:)
Sarah says
Love that shade, it goes perfectly with your vignette. Thanks for the step by step, looks do-able.
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Sarah! We’ll see how it works after Halloween ha ha!
