This is a collection of short essays originally published as magazine articles, so they are on wide-ranging topics of being a woman. Each brief essay is a gem of wisdom and delight. I read it in all in two quick sittings, but I think it would be best read one essay per day so the reader could think about the topics. My favorite was "New Directions" which told the story of a woman in 1903 who was left by her husband with two young sons and made her own way in life, different from society's expectations. It ends with this: "Each of us has the right and the responsibility to assess the roads which lie ahead, and those over which we've traveled, and if the future road looms ominous or unpromising, and the roads back uninviting, then we need to gather our resolve and, carrying only the necessary baggage, step off that road into another direction. If the new choice is also unpalatable, without embarrassment, we must be ready to change that as well."
