That Old, Dated Coat Hanger...Transformed

Hello, fellow DIY friends.  It has been busy, busy here in Lewisville.  Summer is in full swing, and we are enjoying every moment of it!  Today, I want to show you a quick project I worked on and got done in just one day.  I love, love, love quick projects, especially when they give such a big impact.  So, here's what I did. Like?

Aww, pretty, right?  I did it for my girls.  We haven't "decorated" their room, which they share, since they were little girls who loved all things pink.  Little by little, I'm trying to give them a more mature bedroom that they'll love.  This little coat rack is a great start, but here's what it looked like before....big change!

I found it at a thrift store for just $3.  It was gold and red and maybe perfect for a rustic Christmas scene.  I wanted it to say clean, modern, and tween.  To start, like all my other projects, I spray painted it with white primer.

About 20 minutes later, I spray painted it white.  My favorite white at the moment is Heirloom White from Rust Oleum.  LOVE!

Then I had this crazy idea.  I didn't want a plain Jane transformation, so to make it "pop" a bit, I decided to add those ever popular chevron stripes.  I'm not a big fan of the chevron, but it does say teen girls, I think.  The only problem was the yellow I had was to light.  I wanted a little bit of a gold tone, so I experimented by adding grey and brown acrylic paint to the yellow I already had.  Adding a little bit of brown to yellow gives a great gold tone.  We're on our way.

Many of you know, patience is not a strong characteristic of mine when it comes to DIY projects.  I know there are many, many tips and tricks to make chevron stripes, but I didn't have the "time" to go online to check them all out.  So I taped off stripes myself- just eye balled it.

And I think they turned out pretty good.  If I did it all over again though, I'd definitely use painter's tape.  Masking tape just doesn't give you the cleanest lines.

Finally, I used a clear gloss spray to protect all my work.  I love this stuff.  It works like a polyurethane, but much faster.  Warning:  If you spray too much, it will yellow your white paint like polyurethane.

 I hung it up, using my tape trick.  Just place tape on your project just below the "claws" (that hardware you hang the nails on) and mark the distance with a pen.  Place the tape on the wall and hammer in the nails where you marked it.

It hangs nicely above that Pottery Barn chair I got for FREE!  Some one was throwing it away because they couldn't get a paint stain out.  Good thing I have this little thing called the internet to help me get the stain out.  

  I love the results!

And more importantly, so do my girls. I'll say it again...Love thrift store transformations!
