Patriotic Vintage Window & Garland :: AnExtraordinaryDay.net

It’s time to display our red, white, and blue!

Stars and stripes!

Buntings, banners, garlands, wreaths, and….

Old Glory!

4th of July Wreath :: AnExtraordinaryDay.net

It’s time to get in the spirit of the holiday!

Here’s a simple, but festive way to….

Decorate a Vintage Window
with a Patriotic Wreath and Garland for the 4th of July

Patriotic Star Garland :: AnExtraordinaryDay.net

This garland might look a little bit familiar.  I made a similar more simple star garland for my sunroom, which is all decked out for the Fourth of July!  A handful of stars were left over from that project…just enough to create a garland for the vintage window that you’ve also seen here and here.  It was super easy to create.  I just hot glued the stars on a strand of jute.  This one was a wee bit more effort.

American Flag Ribbon -- AnExtraordinaryDay.net

To add a little pizzazz, I cut my stars and stripes ribbon, into strips.  It was super easy to do and gave me a few more options to play with.  I’ll be putting together a tutorial, but in the meantime, I thought it would help to see the ribbon source for the stars and stripes.  I tried to find the ribbon online, but I only found what appears  to be wired version.  It just may be a little late, but then again, check your craft store, they just might have this or something equally as fun.

Independence Day Garland & Wreath :: Stars & Stripes :: AnExtraordinaryDay.net

Does the wreath look a bit familiar?  It’s a new and improved version of this one.  Actually, I can’t say that it is improved as I liked that one quite a bit.  But, this one has the pleated ribbon rosette embellishing it which I think is perfect for the Fourth of July!  Again, the ribbon was cut so that only the blue field of stars is dressing up this wreath.

Be watching for a tutorial of the rosette also.  I discovered an easy way to make ribbon rosettes and they make quite a statement.

What do you think of my Patriotic Vintage Window?

I mostly had fun crafting this project.

Have you ever had a plan and then you second guessed yourself and got started on a ‘better’ version of your original idea?

Um.  That is what I did.

Here’s a glimpse at my “Fail.”

And the mess I created.

My dining table was covered with all the stuff from the project.  What a disaster zone!  Fortunately it only took me about 15 minutes to pick it up and get everything put away.

And one more view of the finally finished window.

Who knew a gal could have so much fun with a vintage window?   I really enjoy decorating her for the holidays.

She makes me smile…all dressed up with a Patriotic Wreath and Garland for the 4th of July.

What have you done or will you do to celebrate the Fourth?

Wishing you an Extraordinary Fourth of July Celebration!

Diane

  1. Nice wreath, but I kinda like the “bunting” 😉

    • Diane says

      Awww…thanks JoAnn!!
      Hope your Fourth is Extraordinary!

  2. Dona says

So…..What’s the ‘fail’ with your fail? I like it! Your window is to die for. I’d give anything for an old window frame! A couple guys in my church were demolishing old homes a while back and I asked if they could get me one. I think they thought I was kidding! (sigh) That’s OK, I can enjoy yours! I’m looking forward to the tutorial on the rosette. I have that same ribbon! My Grt-Grnd daughter and I made her mom (my grnd-daughter) a wreath the other day, with it. Went to Wal Mart and bought a flag, too, so Miss Dany would know what THE FLAG is! So fun. Have a happy and blessed 4th! Dona

    • Diane says

Really, Dona, you make me blush. How cool that you have a window to play with. A home near me was torn down to put up another old one and I saw a window on the heap and picked it off. It isn’t anything as good as this one…but I’m sure I can still have fun with it. Later…
The fail was the book page thingy behind the rosette. I didn’t make it right and I tried five ways to make it better and in the end…arrgh…a whole lot of time wasted. Even my husband told me why it didn’t work…and why he didn’t like it. And that is something he rarely would do.
I’m thrilled that you have the same ribbon Dona. It’s so fun to work with. Well…most of the time. It’s stiffness that makes it good for some projects is a hindrance to others. But…I’m glad I happened upon it and kept it in my stash through the last couple of moves. It was out on the yard sale table last time and didn’t sell. And for some reason I kept it and didn’t donate it. I think that was a God thing…especially as I’ve had so much fun with it this year.
The rosette is coming up. I’m sooo slow on tutorials. They aren’t my favorite thing to do either. But…I love you so I do. 😀
Happiest of 4ths to you too!!

  3. Beautiful window, I love the first version too! Love the ribbon! Tuesday trivia is live, would love for you to share @ http://www.memoriesbythemile.com/
    Happy 4th of July.
Wanda Ann @ Memories by the Mile

    • Diane says

Awww…you are so kind Wanda Ann!
You know, sometimes we have an idea in our heads and when it doesn’t come out exactly we strongly dislike our project. Plus…being a bit of a perfectionist…well… Haha!! 😀
      Hope your Fourth is spectacular!

  4. Love your patriotic window frame!!!!!!! Pinned to my Americana board:) Happy 4th! Stop over http://www.sewsweetvintage.com/2013/07/bicycle-basket-up-cycle.html

    • Diane says

      Hi Michele!!
      Awwww….thanks!! You are so sweet!
      Wishing you a spectacular Fourth!!

  5. I think this came out beautiful and what makes it even more beautiful is that you made it and you are patriotic.

Stopping by from Fine Craft Guild’s linky party. Here is what I shared this week: http://craftybrooklynarmywife.blogspot.com/2013/06/update-and-es-lounge-pants.html

    • Diane says

Awwww….that is just the nicest thing to say.
      Thank you Alisha!
      Happy 4th of July!

  6. Holly says

Wow… your “fail” is what I aspire my DIY’s to be LOL! Hugs, Holly
    http://coconutheadsurvivalguide.com/blog/

    • Diane says

Oh my!!! For some reason I really quite doubt that Holly. 😉
I wouldn’t wish my headache on anyone! LOL!!! And yes…it gave me one. 😀
      Thanks for your kind words….
      Hope your Fourth is spectacular!

  7. Mel says

Awww…..I like the ribbon! Mostly cuz you could do so much with it. And I adore the circle thingy. LOL I know there’s a name for it, but I need more coffee. :-/ Happy Independence Day to you and yours, ma’am. I sooooo need to snag an old door for the wall. How fun to decorate it, season after season, holiday after holiday!
And than you for the ‘fail’. LOL AND the messy table!
I feel soooooooo much better! LOLOL

    • Diane says

Thanks Mel! Haha! That ribbon has been in my stash for way too long. Glad I finally figured out how do use it. Now it makes me happy.
Oh the rosette! I adore it too. 🙂 Isn’t it funny when we get so excited over little things? That whole window thing was all about the rosette.
I’m pretty sure you’re going to have an amazing day!! Enjoy your bug and your wonderful gathering of friends.
      Happy Fourth of July!

  8. Sandi says

Happy 4th of July, Diane! Your window is very festive and the window itself, is very cute! I have an old mirror which looks like a window. You, know with panes. I have plans for it but just never got to it yet. Enjoy your holiday and thanks for sharing at my HOME.

    Blessings,
    Sandi

    • Diane says

You are so kind. Thank you!!
I have so much fun decorating my window, Sandi. I do hope you have a chance to play around with yours.
      Happy Fourth!

  9. I really love your banner! I keep hoping I’ll have time to make one sometime soon to hang on my old window! Thanks for sharing this at TTF.

    Linda

    • Diane says

Oh Linda, I hope you create a banner too! I’ve had so much fun with mine. By the end of the year I’ll be all set for next year. Pretty thrifty, huh? 😀

  10. I don’t think your “fail” version was all that bad! I thought both of them look really cute! I’m stopping by from Tatertots & Jello (#26 Easy & Flavorful Italian Chicken #37 Favorite Crock Pot Recipes) Have a great weekend!

    • Diane says

You are so kind Carrie. If you look close you can see my mistakes. But…maybe I can figure out something to do with it where it isn’t front and center over my couch. 🙂
Thanks for popping by! Hope your weekend is extraordinary!

  11. I like the photo of “the mess” you created! It shows what fun you were having!
    ‘bug

    • Diane says

Haha!! I’m glad you appreciated that! 🙂 It was a last minute thing to do. And boy did I make a mess!!
      Thanks for stopping by!
      Wishing you An Extraordinary Day!

  12. Judi says

I absolutely LOVE what you thought was a fail! Seriously, what was wrong?? I’m pinning that so I can give it a try myself ~ funny how others peoples eyes see our creations differently ~ Love the final display, it adorable!

    • Diane says

It is funny how we see things differently. Thanks for your kind words Judi.
If you notice the angle of the paper horns are off…some of them do not go to the center. I wanted them to be a flat fan and in trying to fill the spaces it just didn’t come out. And believe me I spent more time on that than the rest of the project all together by twice. When something takes forever and doesn’t give you the result you’re looking for…well….I guess it just seems like a major fail. Judi, I am grateful that it will serve as inspiration to you. And in that regard…it didn’t fail. Yes?
Blessings to you, my friend. May your weekend be extraordinary!

    • Judi says

I get it … ,striving for that perfect look/fit ~ fussing, changing, re-doin’ haha! And yes, it is inspiring! Look forward to seeing more …

      • Diane says

Ah….thanks Judi!! I’m so glad you ‘get’ it!! 🙂
And thanks for your kind words. 🙂
Hope your new week is extraordinary!

  13. Susan says

    Very cute window display!

    Big Hugs,
    Susan and Bentley

    • Diane says

You are so sweet, Susan! Thank you!
Best wishes to you and Bentley for a lovely weekend!

  14. Jen says

It’s awesome! I love how you incorporated that vintage window with 4th of July decor!

    • Diane says

Thanks Jen!! I love that old window. 🙂 It has been the perfect shape for playing around with.
May your day be filled with HIS joy!

  15. I agree with the others here…your fail is awesome. I wish my failures were so good! The window turned out very pretty and patriotic. Thank you for sharing it at What We Accomplished Wednesdays. Have a great weekend!

    Hugs,
    Deborah

    • Diane says

Awwww…thanks Deborah. I guess when your husband thinks it’s bad…you think everyone will too!
      Thanks for your kind encouragement.
Hope your holiday weekend has been filled with many lovely memories in the making.

  16. Sally says

I love your vintage window and garland!

I always have a “failed” project — my creative process seems to be a long tortured one hahhahahhaha. I never end up with the anything that resembles my original idea – don’t know why that is? I seem to have to play for a good bit before I have something I like.

    Happy summer and happy crafting!

    • Diane says

      Thank you so much Sally!!
Maybe we are kindred spirits? I visualize so many things that just don’t quite come out the same! LOL!!!
Hope your new week is Extraordinary!

  17. Saw your link at A Favorite Thing and had to check out this wreath – and I love it! I love the blue ribbon and I’m seriously in love with that rosette embellishment!!! Your window looks fabulous, I need to get out my old window and do SOMETHING with it! And please, pass a slice of that coconut cake, thank you 😉

    Mary

    • Diane says

Mary….I could just give you a big hug! Thank you for your kind words about the wreath. And the coconut cake….well…your remark just had me laughing. That isn’t a real cake. It’s a coffee filter wreath that was a sort of fail that I saved by adding another ‘flower’ in the center to make a cake. And I loved that you noticed it. And loved even more that you asked for a slice!! Oh my…I wish it was a real coconut cake….and that we could enjoy a slice together.
      Wishing you An Extraordinary Day!!

  18. Tanya says

I saw an old window the other day that I was considering purchasing. I didn’t. Maybe I should!

Thanks so much for joining in this week!

    xo

The next time you see a window you like…be sure to bring it home. It has been more fun than I ever would have guessed.
