For those who are new, Rochelle shares a photo prompt to which several #FridayFictioneers compose a 100-word flash of fiction. Come along, how badly could it hurt? Besides, they have a pill for that.
This bit was inspired by a quote:
Never leave a friend behind. Friends are all we have to get us through this life – and they are the only things from this world that we could hope to see in the next. -Dean Koontz
Here’s my contribution:
Beholden
A lifetime, so it seemed, Brady continued to fail, always shy of perfection. Try as he did, with mallet and chisel, the stone resisted, fought his will to preserve his life’s love, to forever retain her physical beauty, his Sarah.
Daily he was reminded of being human, of being wholly inadequate.
How could she know the way she belittled him?
How she did mock simply by being uniquely and unattainably beautiful.
Once more, she stood before him, statuesque and lovely. In an impulsive and blind rage, a torrent of fury overwhelmed, and Brady embarked upon a new form of Art.

Something tells me the new from of art isn’t the kind we want to see in a gallery. As always, stunningly strong writing that bristled with emotion. Nice one, JK
Shalom,
Rochelle
If I had 200 words, you’d know better.
Oh, what a twisted tale this is! Beautifully written.
I’m glad you enjoyed!
Nice! I liked this.
Come again. Thanks for reading.
Whoa! That stopped it! Great descriptions leading to the end. Great!
Good. Please come again. Also, feel free to cruise thru the others I’ve shared.
fantastic. these are the kinds of stories that i love.. seeing inside the twisted minds of disturbed individuals.. brilliant.
It’s a peek inside the workings of my mind. Thanks for visiting.
and a wonderful mind you have ^^
You’re saying you’re twisted and disturbed? Or should I even ask?
Of course. Otherwise I’d be completely boring.
I really enjoyed your take on this. I could almost feel his mood change! Which is pretty normal for artistic personalities! And Dean Koonz – a favorite!
Thank you, Penny. I’m a Koontz fan for sure.
🙂
I really thought he was going to smash the sculpture at the end, but I liked that you kept it open ended. A great story. I think you might be missing a ‘d’ at the end of ‘belittle’.
I’m glad you enjoyed. And I did make that correction, thank you.
That was some mighty quote about friendship! And equally impressive sculpture! And, of course, your little essay is so good.
Thank you for visiting. Come again!
I took it that he graffiti’d his art. Perhaps I was wrong…
Hello Sandra. It’s an ‘open’ ending, so it is as you wish. Since I tend toward the darker side I was envisioning him using his tools upon her, destroying and recreating that which frustrated him so.
The abrupt mood change was done very well. I enjoyed reading this piece. I only wish it could have been extended to glimpse a bit more into his future art project.
I’m glad you appreciated. I was tempted to elaborate at the end, but refrained.

your ending with sublime.
Thank you for reading.
From love to insanity, nothing else to say. Nice to know I am not the only twisted soul around. Love this.
Twisted like a cork screw.
There’s a lot of raw emotion in this. I like how you leave the ending subtle and to the reader’s imagination.
Thank you, David.
This is a very complex story in so few words, and, yes, I agree the emotion is raw. But, it’s so truthful to the artistic process. Great job.
Here’s mine: http://unexpectedpaths.com/friday-fictioneers/hephaestus-wedge/
Thank you so much for your kind words.
Sounds ominous for her….I can understand his sense of impotence from your portrayal. Well done.
Thanks, Erin!
Beautifully descriptive and emotionally complex. Well done, JK. http://readinpleasure.wordpress.com/2013/02/01/fridayfictioneers-janus
Thank you for reading.
Hi J.K.,
Nicely written story of a man driven. Like the way you leave a lot to the imagination. Ron
Yes, a driven man.
Thanks, Ron.
Sounds like Brady is going off the rails. Will it be just this once or will all his relationships be like this?
I think I see a trend.
Thanks!
Eerie lovely end. And it’s all open ended. I love it.
Thank, Bjorn.
Such a good story. Enamored with the quote by Dean Koontz.
Thank you! I’m glad you’ve been enjoying my flashes.
I’m glad you’ve been enjoying mine. Thank you. Your writing is dark. I want to be able to write like that. I try, and then romance, tragedy, and heartbreak spew out. Oh well, can’t blame a girl for trying.
Re-arranging her face to match the sculpture? Easier than the other way round! Ann
Perhaps.
Thanks for reading. Come again.
Oh my. New kind of art probably isn’t gonna be a good thing.
I think you might just be correct. Thanks for stopping by and reading.
Dear JK,
There is truth in your story. The artist is growing, breaking free, or just breaking. Great writing from the master of painting the outline of a thing and so illuminating it.
Aloha,
Doug
Always such kind words with deep insight. Thanks, Doug.
It’s always the fault of the beautiful woman; Happens to me all the time. (kidding!) Nice essay.
Thank you so much for visiting!
Frightening story. Your every word adds to the images of a dangerous killer. True to your style, JK of the horror genre. What an evil man he was, gone berserk. Yet, because of feeling such low self esteem he was driven to do what he did. How sad, as he had no hope to overcome such an insecurity. Did I interpret all that correctly? 🙂
Bingo.
As ever, thank you.
And A serial artist is born, Lovely imagery.
I am number 91 this week
Thanks, Yaral. Have you set up a wordpress site yet? When I visit your writing I run into difficulty with ‘liking’ and commenting. It’s probably just me tho.
I do actually run my site with word press in the background so not sure why you are having difficulty liking and commenting, It seems to be a bit buggy after this last update though.
i assume a form of art in the style of jacques de rippere? well done.
