Thank you to Rochelle Wisoff-Fields for all her work and organization. You can visit her site and read through the other Flash Fiction Friday postings at:

For those who are new, Rochelle shares a photo prompt to which several #FridayFictioneers compose a 100-word flash of fiction. Come along, how badly could it hurt? Besides, they have a pill for that.

This bit was inspired by a quote:

Never leave a friend behind. Friends are all we have to get us through this life – and they are the only things from this world that we could hope to see in the next.  -Dean Koontz

Here’s my contribution:

Beholden

A lifetime, so it seemed, Brady continued to fail, always shy of perfection. Try as he did, with mallet and chisel, the stone resisted, fought his will to preserve his life’s love, to forever retain her physical beauty, his Sarah.

Daily he was reminded of being human, of being wholly inadequate.

How could she know the way she belittled him?

How she did mock simply by being uniquely and unattainably beautiful.

Once more, she stood before him, statuesque and lovely. In an impulsive and blind rage, a torrent of fury overwhelmed, and Brady embarked upon a new form of Art.

  1. Something tells me the new from of art isn’t the kind we want to see in a gallery. As always, stunningly strong writing that bristled with emotion. Nice one, JK
    Shalom,
    Rochelle

  2. Oh, what a twisted tale this is! Beautifully written.

  3. deanabo says:

    Nice! I liked this.

  4. wmqcolby says:

Whoa! That stopped it! Great descriptions leading to the end. Great!

  5. kz says:

fantastic. these are the kinds of stories that i love.. seeing inside the twisted minds of disturbed individuals.. brilliant.

  6. pennycoho says:

I really enjoyed your take on this. I could almost feel his mood change! Which is pretty normal for artistic personalities! And Dean Koonz – a favorite!

  7. claireful says:

I really thought he was going to smash the sculpture at the end, but I liked that you kept it open ended. A great story. I think you might be missing a ‘d’ at the end of ‘belittle’.

  8. naturelands says:

That was some mighty quote about friendship! And equally impressive sculpture! And, of course, your little essay is so good.

  9. Sandra says:

I took it that he graffiti’d his art. Perhaps I was wrong…

    • JKBradley says:

Hello Sandra. It’s an ‘open’ ending, so it is as you wish. Since I tend toward the darker side I was envisioning him using his tools upon her, destroying and recreating that which frustrated him so.

  10. The abrupt mood change was done very well. I enjoyed reading this piece. I only wish it could have been extended to glimpse a bit more into his future art project.

  12. your ending with sublime.

  13. From love to insanity, nothing else to say. Nice to know I am not the only twisted soul around. Love this.

  14. There’s a lot of raw emotion in this. I like how you leave the ending subtle and to the reader’s imagination.

  15. unspywriter says:

This is a very complex story in so few words, and, yes, I agree the emotion is raw. But, it’s so truthful to the artistic process. Great job.

  16. erinleary says:

Sounds ominous for her….I can understand his sense of impotence from your portrayal. Well done.

  17. Hi J.K.,
Nicely written story of a man driven. Like the way you leave a lot to the imagination. Ron

  18. Joe Owens says:

Sounds like Brady is going off the rails. Will it be just this once or will all his relationships be like this?

  19. Eerie lovely end. And it’s all open ended. I love it.

  20. rheath40 says:

Such a good story. Enamored with the quote by Dean Koontz.

  21. annisik51 says:

Re-arranging her face to match the sculpture? Easier than the other way round! Ann

  22. Oh my. New kind of art probably isn’t gonna be a good thing.

  23. dmmacilroy says:

    Dear JK,

There is truth in your story. The artist is growing, breaking free, or just breaking. Great writing from the master of painting the outline of a thing and so illuminating it.

    Aloha,

    Doug

  24. It’s always the fault of the beautiful woman; Happens to me all the time. (kidding!) Nice essay.

  25. Joyce says:

Frightening story. Your every word adds to the images of a dangerous killer. True to your style, JK of the horror genre. What an evil man he was, gone berserk. Yet, because of feeling such low self esteem he was driven to do what he did. How sad, as he had no hope to overcome such an insecurity. Did I interpret all that correctly? 🙂

  26. yaralwrites says:

And A serial artist is born, Lovely imagery.
I am number 91 this week

    • JKBradley says:

Thanks, Yaral. Have you set up a wordpress site yet? When I visit your writing I run into difficulty with ‘liking’ and commenting. It’s probably just me tho.

      • Yaral says:

I do actually run my site with word press in the background so not sure why you are having difficulty liking and commenting, It seems to be a bit buggy after this last update though.

  27. rich says:

i assume a form of art in the style of jacques de rippere? well done.
